“Travertine is not only a timeless stone, but with each piece lies a story… One such travertine is the Umbria Savera which is quarried out of Turkey and can be purchased in either a crosscut look, which is honed and filled, or vein cut look, which is brushed and chiseled.”
When building or remodeling, nothing seems to be quite more of a focal feature to a room than one’s flooring. Its allurement and draw create a tone and atmosphere tying a room’s elements into a main theme for design. No tile more so than perhaps the travertine suggests such an infinitely ending contemporary beauty that has survived the ages.
“Travertine is known as one of the most beautiful and most durable stones available to the consumer market when building or remodeling a home. Over the past several decades, travertine has become a staple in meeting the needs of contractors, builders, and homeowners when choosing a natural stone product in interior and exterior application…Travertine, which is a member of the limestone family, comes in many different shapes, sizes, and finishes,” says a natural stone representative.
One such travertine is the Umbria Savera which is quarried out of Turkey and can be purchased in either a crosscut look, which is honed and filled, or vein cut look, which is brushed and chiseled. “Crosscut refers to the cut of the stone at the quarry. This cut gives the travertine a flowery pattern in the body of the stone. Honed refers to the texture of the product. If you ran your hand across the surface it would have a smooth even texture to it. Fill simply refers to the pitting in the surface being filled with portland cement at the quarry warehouse before shipping… This particular travertine is medium in color. [Which means] a light to medium beige in color and will have occasional darker area on the surface of the tile. This enhances the natural beauty of the product and makes the product very unique,” says natural stone representative.
The Umbria Savera which is brushed and chiseled, on the other-hand, refers to the finish and style of the product. It has a “medium beige/fawn color that is moderately consistent compared to the honed and filled product…If you ran your hand across a brushed product you would feel the natural clefting of the product and see a slight sheen on the face of the product. The chisel is referring to the outside of the tile…This pattern is a beautiful pattern that creates more interest and movement when installed,” says natural stone representative.
Travertine is not only a timeless stone, but with each piece lies a story. “In fact, the Romans used 100,000 cubic meters of the travertine in the building of the Coliseum which was completed in 80 A.D.. [Even] to this day through natural disasters, stone robberies, and everyday wear it has held up beautifully to be over 2000 years old,” adds natural stone representative. So, travertine isn’t just an option for your flooring design, but an opportunity to make a lasting impression.
